Dear Lynn- Your doctors are probably being extra cautious in looking at this enlarged lymph node and may want you to undergo further testing for this reason. Many swollen lymph nodes turn out to be benign (noncancerous) and are "reactive" lymph nodes. That means they are reacting to some condtion in the breast or arm or chest. For example, a lymph node may swell after a trauma to the hand or arm (even a manicure can do it). It may also swell in response to fibrocystic condition of the breast when cysts and lumps form and there is inflammation in the area. Sometimes it swells for other reasons. In rare cases, it can also be due to cancer, which is why these things should be checked out. It sounds like a good idea to get the sonogram and get an accurate measurement of the lymph node. The radiologist may recommend a needle sample to test some cells if the lymph node looks abnormal and/or large. You doctor may recommend that the entire lymph node be removed (a minor surgery) if it has remained large and he or she is more concerned because of that. Somemes, your doctor will simply choose to observe what the lymph node does over time and not recommend any other testing for now. The options are best discussed with your regular doctor after the sonogram is done. Good luck. Hannah Brooks, MD,FACS

With my first mammogram they found a small lymph node that was swollen so they rescheduled a second mammogram and a ultrasound. Needless to say I'm scare and have no idea what this is or why. They won't tell you nothing on the phone. And my doctor has yet to call me even though its been over 2 weeks since the report came in. It'll 3 weeks inbetween test. I hope if it was really serious they would of squeezed me in sooner. Does any one have any info what this may be. I do have periotical low pain under my arm in the left outside breast.
