Dear Rose- It sounds from your note that you've had mammograms in the past. If so, did your radiologist have the prior x-rays to compare? It may be that these 'suspicious' nodules were there in the past and have not changed. In that case, observation is not an unreasonable recommendation. What should be looked into, however, is the use of the word 'suspicious' along with a category of BIRAD 3 on the mammogram final report. I can imagine how it can be confusing to you! It would confuse many physicians, too. The designation of BIRAD 3 is very specific--it should be limited to 'abnormalities' seen on mammogram that have a 2% chance or LESS of being malignant. In other words, the radiologist should NOT use short term (six month) follow up observation UNLESS THE nodules are probably benign looking. If the word 'suspicious' is used, a biopsy would be more in order.
You may want to get a second opinion from another radiologist who can review all your films including this new one. if you do need a biopsy, be sure to ask if the newer stereotactic biopsy is possible. This type of biopsy will give you an answer without having to undergo open surgery. Some nodules can be tested this way and others may not be--but you should ask the radiologist if it is possible. Good luck. Hannah Brooks, MD,FACS

On my yearly mammogram 3 small(3-4 mm) suspicious nodules and an intramammary lymph node showed up along with some scattered calcifications. I was listed as category 3 and it was sugested that I come back in 6 months for a follow-up. Waiting 6 months seems like an awfully long tome to me and considering the word suspicious was used that doesn't do much to aliviate my fears either. I have scheduled a time to talk with my Dr. He know that I have a history of secondary family memebers with Cancer (2 aunts, Moms sister and Dads sister plus a cousin) What kinds of things should I ask him? Am I being overly casious? If there is something negative hiding in there could six months make a diiference? I am 6 years past menopause. Thanks for your help.
