Dear Ellen- I'm not sure that the small cysts would have anything to do with dilated blood vessels, but it was good that a sonogram was performed to evaluate the area. It is hard at your age to be sure that changes are not due to your menstrual cycles,or birth control pills, as you indicated. However, if your breast examination and sonogram are negative it is much less likley that these changes are significant. Some increased engorgement in the breast, with dilatation of veins can occur with these "normal" conditions. It would be helpful, too, to know if the sonogram was used with duplex to see if these blood vessels are unusual or associated with anything nearby. A diagnostic mammogram can be attempted, but it may also be difficult to interpret due to the natural density of the tissue in your breast and the difficulty with picking up any abnormalities under the nipple--where ducts coalesce and tissue may be even denser. Monitor frequently, and, if you notice any changes, immediately return to your doctor. I'm in my late 20s and noticed prominent blood vessels in one breast a few weeks ago (during ovulation). They're painless and not as visible when my nipple is erect. My nurse practitioner in my gynecologist's office checked both my breasts and didn't notice anything irregular, although an ultrasound revealed two tiny benign cysts in that breast. Could the blood vessels be related to the cysts? Are they hormonal (should they disappear after my menstrual cycle)? I'm also on birth control pills. I have a family history of breast cancer so I'm a little sensitive when I notice something "unusual." Thanks.
