Dear Christina- Based on the history of premenopausal breast cancer, you are at high risk for developing breast cancer compared with the average woman. your family members should also consider genetic testing and you should call your nearest academic medical center for advice on genetics counseling and risk. A mammogram should be done each year, as the amount of radiation is minimal;the risk of cancer is much higher than the risk of radiation with the kinds of mammograms done nowadays. Please check imaginis.com and nih.gov for more information on this and other questions you may have regarding breast cancer risks and precautions. Hannah brooks, MD,FACS

I am 35 years old and my mother and sister have both had breast cancer. My mother was 40 and my sister was 45 years of age. I started taking regular mammograms a couple of years ago. My questions are: 1. Am I at a high risk for getting breast cancer? 2. Instead of getting a mammogram every year, is it a good idea to alternate a breast ultra-sound and a mammogram, for fear of too much radiation? Also, do you have any other information that could be of great help to me? Thank you.
