Hi Joanne, I'm am currently taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen and have been for about a year. I have had no side effects -- no weight gain, breast soreness, headaches, etc. At first I was worried about breast cancer and a little scared to take it. My OB/GYN informed me that it actually decreases chances of Ovarian Cancer. I understand your concern with your mother and I'm so sorry you are going through such a trying time. You might want to be careful with the pill. I too, haven't had kids and have been advised to stop taking the pill 6 months before I start trying for a baby. This because it may increase chances of losing the baby. My suggestion is to look into herbal subliments for period regulation/cramps. They are out there and do work. They do take longer to take effect so don't give up. Check out your local wellness store, GNC, or online. In your case I would try that first. If it doesn't help then talk more with you OB/GYN and the direct risks for yourself. If anything, don't stay on the pil! l for years and years. I believe that is when it can get dangerous. I'm not an expert by the way! I hope it works out for you. Michelle
