Dear Anon- To my knowledge, there is no reported link between these two conditions. The deposition of macro or microcalcifications in the breast tissue occurs after trauma, inflammation, or due to cells growing and dying rapidly within certain areas of the breast. The body tends to deposit calcium in areas of cell death, after the inflammatory process has subsided. Kidney stones, while they may sometimes occur with infection, usually start because the calcium precipitates with other molecules in the urine, forming crystals which then grow into small stones. There are many reasons for this, and you will likely be able to find excellent educational material on any number of reliable websites (look under: urolithiasis, nephrolithiasis, etc). There may be dietary or other changes to can make if you are also prone to kidney stones. Breast calcifications are not affected by these interventions. Hannah Brooks, MD,FACS

I have tried searching the web, but I can't find what I'm seeking... In the past week, my mother had a (thankfully benign) needle biopsy after her mammogram showed too many calcifications and my younger sister was striken with kidney stones. The only link I can find is "calcium" but I'm not sure what that really means - and should I make any changes in my own life as a preventative measure?

thanks
