Dear Jamo-

Yes, birth control pills, since they are made of a combination of hormones that affect breast tissue can cause many obvious breast changes. While you are PROBABLY correct in assuming this is a benign lump, it is NEVER a good idea to leave something and hope it goes away. This is a new mass and should be investigated. A physical examination by a skilled physician, coupled with perhaps a sonogram and/or a fine needle sampling, would probably put the issue to rest. It is much safer to approach breast masses this way. Bring this to the attention of your physician some time in the near future. Good luck. Hannah Brooks, MD,FACS

I was wondering if birth control caused changes in a woman's breasts. I am 25 yrs. old and started taking birth control pills for the first time a little over a month ago. After a couple weeks of taking them, my breasts were very tender for a week and then the tenderness went away. About a month after taking the pills, I feel a painless marble-sized lump in my right breast about an inch above the nipple that I am sure was not there before.

Could this be a side effect of the birth pill that is harmless? I don't want to make a bigger deal than it is and make an appointment for something that is normal, but I am concerned about the change I noticed.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for any advice.

Sincerely, A Concerned Woman
