<br> Dear curious-- It is always important to check out any unusual breast discharge. This is especially true if the discharge is coming from only one breast. While a discharge may indicate an underlying breast cancer, most of the time it is due to some other benign cause. For example, you may have recently started birth control pills and this can cause changes in the breast tissue (you may find there is discharge from the other breast with a very light squeeze); a discharge may also indicate a small wartlike growth, called an intraductal papilloma, inside a breast duct. These are easily removed and are not cancerous. There are many other reasons for discharge and you can do some research on the topic at sites like imaginis.com or national institute of health sites at nih.gov. When you visit your physician, they will examine you carefully. You may be sent for imaging tests such as a diagnostic sonogram or mammogram. The physician may take a sample of the discharge itself and send it on a slide for laboratory analysis, to see if there are any suspicious cells in the fluid. You may be referred to a breast specialist for further evaluation. Good luck. At first I disregarded the discharge because I thought that it was a drop of water I had not wiped off after taking a shower. But on thursday night while trying to scratch an itch on my breast, I noticed a similar drop of discharge on my nipple again. Does this mean that I may have breast cancer? I do not have a history of breast cancer in my family nor have I ever had a child. I would appreciate it if any OB- GYN could provide an explanation for this (I can't seem to wait until I can visit my doctor's).Curious student
