[Birth Control] Starting Mid Cycle

Hello, I got the birth contol from my doctor about 2 weeks ago, I was suppose to get my period about a week ago but it is late. I am not pregnant, that is not why it is late. I have not had sex. Anyways I know you suppose to wait until you get your period to start it. Would it hurt if I started it this Sunday and didnt have my period yet? Or would everything be screwed up? Thank you
