[Birth Control] Started taking Ortho TC at the wrong time

Hi,

I just started taking Ortho Tri Cyclen last week. The directions state to take the pill on the sunday after you start your period but since my period is so irregular (sometimes takes 6 weeks), I wasnt sure when I would be able to start taking the pill so I sort of rushed it and started taking it that day. It was approximately 2 weeks after my last period ended. Since this is a varying level hormone pill and I took it at the wrong time in my cycle, how long will the pill take to become effective? Also, have I messed up my cycle, or do you think my cycle will adapt to the pill after a month or so? Do I need to just start over? I am not currently having unprotected sex, but would still like to know how protected I am just in case. Thanks.
