If started on the first day of your period, it provides protection after seven days (and probably sooner). If started on the first Sunday after the first day of your period, it provides protection after seven days. If started any other time during your cycle, you should use a backup method of birth control for the entire first pack of pills.
"Full" protection, however, doesn't mean there's no risk of pregnancy. With typical use, out of one hundred women using the pill for a year, three will get pregnant. Also, the pill provides no protection against sexually transmitted infections. Using condoms *and* the pill makes sense for a great many women.
