[Birth Control] starting birth control

Hi... I could use some answers. I'm 20 years old and have become sexually active a few months ago. Since condoms with spermicide give me urinary tract infections, I've decided to go on Orthotricyclen under the advice of my gyno. I have a few questions about this. First, I know it's common to start the pills the first day of menstruation. However, my gyno told me to start them today, Dec. 11, even though my period started on the 1st of this month and ended on the 7th. She said that it will be effective after my next menstrual cycle in January. Is this absolutely certain? And although the pill has a low failure rate, I can't help being paranoid about pregnancy. Since periods are so light or even absent while on the pill, is there any other way to be reassured that I'm not pregnant? I usually use my period to be sure of this, but I think I'll be too paranoid in its absence. Also, my mother died from breast cancer when she was 42. Should being on the pill make me even more concerned about my risk of breast cancer than I am now? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
